About Us

About Us

The union plays a crucial role in fostering dialogue between workers, employers, and policymakers to create sustainable and mutually beneficial labor relations. Through its advocacy, USHAHOS strives to ensure that workers’ voices are heard and their rights are upheld, while also encouraging industry growth and professional development. By providing education, training, and resources, the organization equips workers with the tools needed to improve their skills, secure better opportunities, and contribute meaningfully to Somalia’s economy.

USHAHOS also champions gender equality and inclusivity within the workplace, recognizing the unique challenges faced by women and marginalized groups in these industries. By addressing issues such as discrimination, harassment, and unequal pay, the union works tirelessly to create a safe and equitable environment for all workers. In doing so, USHAHOS not only uplifts the workforce but also strengthens the industries it represents, paving the way for a more prosperous and just future.

Our Key Activities

1. Advocacy for Workers’ Rights: USHAHOS actively lobbies policymakers to strengthen labor laws, ensuring they address issues like fair wages, decent working hours, and workplace safety.
2. Training and Education: The union conducts workshops and training sessions to raise awareness among workers about their rights and responsibilities, as well as to build leadership skills among members.
3. Gender Equality Initiatives: Recognizing that women make up a significant portion of the workforce in these industries, USHAHOS champions gender equality by advocating against gender-based violence, closing the pay gap, and promoting women into leadership roles within the union.
4. Community Engagement: USHAHOS goes beyond labor rights by engaging in initiatives aimed at community development, such as supporting local businesses, addressing social injustices, and raising awareness about environmental sustainability within the hospitality industry.
5. International Collaboration: The union works with international labor organizations and trade unions to share knowledge, participate in global forums, and strengthen protections for Somali workers on an international scale.

Challenges and Achievements

Operating in a country with economic instability and limited legal protections for workers, USHAHOS faces numerous challenges, including addressing informal employment and combating exploitative practices. Despite these obstacles, the union has successfully:
• Negotiated improved conditions for workers in hotels and restaurants.
• Established support systems for domestic workers, often among the most vulnerable.
• Partnered with international organizations to build capacity and share resources.
